"Outing" means admitting to being gay, as in "coming out of the closet". Why i suddenly say that leh? Don't worry, i like ladies. Just Googled "outing ideas" for the proposed class gathering.

Try it.

Educational stuff.

Anyway, some errata for the gathering mail i sent to egroups:

It's cooking in the kitchen, not the library. Traumatising experience in the library today, that's why.

It's tidbits, not titbits. Don't go bite someone in the... you know... there... yeah...

My goodness... Mrs Ch'ng would be so disappointed with your English!

Anyway relax lah mQ... Everyone's (who's studying) is going through a similar experience... Don't kill yourself over it.

Exams ah... aiya, so experienced already. Every time exam come everybody also feel like will die but 20 years already still alive right?

Can one.

Jiayou. =)

Haha, this is a bit crazy. Been thinking about "first meetings". Realised i've never thought about how big an impact people will have on me subsequently the first time we meet. It's quite fun trying to recall these first meetings.

For some, the memories are so fuzzy or the event is just so non descript (e.g. first day in class) it's almost as if there was no first meeting - like we somehow just got to know each other. On the other hand, there are the ones where i can state the exact date, time, location, even parts of the conversation verbatim. These experiences are usually very pleasant or super traumatic. And of course there are the people i have totally forgotten. Not to mention the nameless strangers i meet on the streets everyday.

Maybe one day i'll compile a whole list and document each and every first meeting. You guys can help recall our first meetings. And i'll add to it everyday as i meet more people.

Haha... yeah it's nuts... but no harm dreaming, right?

Option A: Conservative (hum4) gameplan emphasizing damage-control.
Option B: All out Death-or-Glory charge with safety off and both eyes closed. (Use the Force, Luke.)

Experience tells me i'm usually quite irrational. Which is why i'm in such deep shit right now.

Haven't been keeping in touch with the counselee. i'm turning out to be like my non-existant counselor. Cannot...

but... he smarter than me leh... must save me own ass first...

i'll check on the guy later in the afternoon.

Promise.

Yay.

How to tackle 5-stem True/False questions with negative marking within each question?

It would appear as if guessing confers no advantage as each correct guess (50% chance) would be negated by an incorrect one (50% chance). However, negative marking occurs only within each question, i.e deductions do not spill over to other questions. This creates a statistical advantage, especially so when there’s lots of guessing to do.

Let's try to work it out.

Scenario 1: Unsure of 1 stem, i.e. can answer 4 stems

Do not answer. Outcome: 4 marks
Guess 1 stem. Outcome: 3 marks 50%, 5 marks 50%. E(x) = 4

Recommendation: No difference in E(x). Go with your gut.

Scenario 2: Unsure of 2 stems

Do not Answer - 3 marks
Guess 1 - 2 marks 50%, 4 marks 50%. E(x) = 3
Guess 2 - 1 mark 25%, 3 marks 50%, 5 marks 25%. E(x) = 3

Recommendation: No difference in E(x). Guess 2 "feels" safe enough with a 75% safety margin (improvement or no change), though it makes no difference statistically. Again a matter of gut feeling.

Scenario 3: Unsure of 3 stems

Do not Answer - 2 marks
Guess 1 - 1 mark 50%, 3 marks 50%. E(x) = 2
Guess 2 - 0 mark 25%, 2 marks 50%, 4 marks 25%. E(x) = 2
Guess 3 - 0 mark 12.5%, 1 mark 37.5%, 3 marks 37.5%, 5 marks, 12.5%. E(x) = 2.125

Recommendation: Guess 3 for the favourable E(x).

Scenario 4: Unsure of 4 stems

Do not Answer - 1 mark
Guess 1 - 0 mark 50%, 2 marks 50%. E(x) = 1
Guess 2 - 0 mark 25%, 1 mark 50%, 3 marks 25%. E(x) = 1.25
Guess 3 - 0 mark 50%, 2 marks 37.5%, 4 marks 12.5%. E(x) = 1.25
Guess 4 - 0 mark 31.25%, 1 mark 37.5%, 3 marks 25%, 5 marks 6.25%. E(x) = 1.4375

Recommendation: Guess 4 for the best E(x).

Scenario 5: Unsure of all 5 stems

Do not Answer - 0 mark
Guess 1 - 0 mark 50%, 1 mark 50%. E(x) = 0.5
Guess 2 - 0 mark 75%, 2 marks 25%. E(x) = 0.5

Guess 3 - 0 mark 50%, 1 mark 37.5%, 3 marks 12.5%. E(x) = 0.75

Guess 4 - 0 mark 68.75%, 2 marks 25%, 4 marks 6.25%. E(x) = 0.75
Guess 5 - 0 mark 50%, 1 mark 31.25%, 3 marks 15.625%, 5 marks 3.125%. E(x) = 0.9375

Recommendation: Go all the way for the best E(x).

Interesting point to note: By guessing all 125 stems, the expected score is 23.4375 upon 125, which equates to an 18.75% score for this CA.

4 hours left to cover one semester worth of neuroscience. By the way, this is the first time i am reading the notes since the lectures. And i just bought the text 2 days ago.

Exciting stuff.

Spot the joke.

Q: Name 2 substances secreted by the suprarenal glands.

A: Adrenaline and epinephrine.

Yeah, i know it's not that funny.

i couldn't resist. i'm a sucker for things like that.

Angela Aki's "Kiss Me Goodbye" is looping on my comp. It's a kind of pre-exam ritual i've adopted since the last pros. Think it's mostly because i'll be kissing my grades goodbye.
i don't need luck now, i need divine intervention.
And i love Ong Wei Yee!!!!!

By the way, $$$ = qian2.

Qian1 is lead (as in Pb) or something else (like qian1 shou3 - hold hands, or any other organ of your choice).

And we don't know who owes who yet until you provide values for x, y and z.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHH......

The Zeroth Law of Cutie-Dynamics

The Zeroth Law of Cutie-Dynamics states that, for 3 objects A, B, and C, if A and B are both in cutie-equilibrium with C then A and B are in cutie-equilibrium with each other.

Applications of the Zeroth Law of Cutie-Dynamics

1) Measurement of Cuteness

To measure the cuteness of any object (e.g. a person or animal). The empirical nature of this measurement is such that there can be no universal standard for cuteness. The yardstick by which one measures cuteness is derived from one's experiences, i.e. the object to be measured is compared against objects that one has encountered before. Which means my stick can be longer than yours.

The nature of objects compared need not be similar, for example, comparing a human to an Eeyore is perfectly acceptable although the human is likely to come up short.

2) Oblique Compliment/Insult

The Zeroth Law may be applied in (sort of) everyday situations as part of a "flanking approach" to compliment or insult. It would be best to illustrate this application with an example:

"Oh! Look at that baby! She's so cute!!! =) Know what? She looks just like you."
- excerpt from conversation overheard on bus.

This author almost puked. However, credit must be given for the sound application of a scientific principle. It was also noted that the response to the compliment was definitely positive.

In order to apply the Zeroth Law in an insult, simply replace "that baby" with something else in the above example. Be creative.

Forgot to settle the $$$. Let me attempt to sort it out.

Amount paid:

MM = 3+x, x = carrot cake
TKM = 5+1.50
MQ = y+4z, y = satay, z = sugar cane
KKF = 1.50

Total = 3+x+5+1.50+y+4z+1.50 = 11+x+y+4z

Amount each is suppose to pay = (11+x+y+4z)/4 = 2.75+z+(x+y)/4

MQ treats KKF to sugar cane. Therefore, amount each suppose to pay is:

MQ = 2.75+2z+(x+y)/4
KKF = 2.75+(x+y)/4
TKM/MM = 2.75+z+(x+y)/4

For the purpose of working out who owes who $$$, i propose the concept of a "central pool" of $$$ to which those who are "under par" must contribute and from which the relevant people can claim.

The following owe the central pool:

KKF = 2.75+(x+y)/4 - 1.50 = 1.25+(x+y)/4

The following might owe or can claim. If the sum is +ve the person owes the pool. If -ve the person claims.

MM = 2.75+z+(x+y)/4-(3+x) = -0.25+z+(y-3x)/4
MQ = 2.75+2z+(x+y)/4-(y+4z) = 2.75-2z+(x-3y)/4
TKM = 2.75+z+(x+y)/4 - (5+1.50) = -3.75+z+(x+y)/4

For a while i almost thought i could work out x, y and z by simultaneous equations until i realised MM, MQ and TKM are variables as well.

Oh shoots... i realised calling someone a variable can be quite insulting... and a constant for that matter... anyway that's besides the point.

It would be quite helpful if people can provide values for x, y and z. The whole thing will be quite easy to work out by plugging values into the equations.

OR... we can forget about this whole $$$ thing and just be very glad for the good food and wonderful company. And mostly because i have a good feeling TKM owes the pool.

p.s. Please do not ask the "Babe" about that piece of information.
